“Loose and unhurried, these are a pair of songs completed at the beginning of 2019. I wrote them with the desire to make something that felt simultaneously calm and wild, and challenged myself to subtract, using as few layers as I could.

I often follow a number of musical paths concurrently, sometimes of very disparate character. These two felt like a good pair though, along a similar line of thinking. Unlike much of my other work for Low Lumens, there’s no pervasive drive that pushes the songs along, they are at times imprecise and wandering, textured and startling.

I’ve been thinking a lot about tension, how we live with it, how terrible it can feel, but at times (and perhaps counterintuitively) be very useful. A lot of difficulty has happened since finishing my last record in 2017 (both personally and collectively). But amidst it all, there has been so much that is wonderful and surprising, life that continues to be bright, beautiful, and hopeful.

I tried to imbue these songs with that sense of tension, a feeling of beauty and dissonance. Sonically, both feature manipulated voice, electric keyboard, and layers of melodic texture.
